Do you think of boxwood as stuffy plants only used in fancy landscapes or large-scale estates? True, their formality dates back centuries in English gardens, and then in Colonial Williamsburg. But a lot has changed since then; it’s time to fast forward. Today’s varieties make boxwood more versatile than ever and worthy of a place in the garden.

So, how do you choose the right boxwood for your garden or landscape? We know it can be confusing, so allow us to simplify things a bit with the best varieties and their uses.  And they’re all here at Heritage Farm and Garden!

Boxwood ‘Baby Jade’ produces a compact mound of superfine evergreen leaves that retain their color throughout the year. A perfect choice for low, dense hedging and smaller garden spaces. Full to part sun; 3’ tall and wide.

Boxwood ‘Green Gem’ provides a small, lush mound of emerald green summer foliage with some winter bronzing. Its oval form and dense foliage is perfect for low hedges and foundation plantings. Full to part sun; 4’ tall and wide. Can also be used for topiaries. It’s helpful to protect this variety from drying winter winds.

Boxwood ‘Green Mountain’ is a vigorous shrub with bright green foliage that retains good color throughout the winter. Its upright, naturally cone-shaped habit makes it an excellent choice for topiaries, containers, or as a formal garden accent or hedge.  Full to part sun; 5’ tall by 3’ wide.

Boxwood ‘Green Velvet’ has a full-bodied habit that is low, rounded and dense. Its luxuriant deep green velvety leaf color remains even through the most difficult winters.  Full to part sun; 3 – 4’ tall and wide. When sheared, it creates a crisp low hedge or useful for topiaries.

Boxwood ‘Variegata’ sports small green leaves that are bordered by an irregular creamy white variegation that add interest and color to the year-round landscape. Full to part sun; 5 to 8’ tall and wide. Easily pruned into a hedge or topiaries; also works well for containers and foundation plantings.

Boxwood ‘Wintergreen’ is an incredibly versatile and popular addition to the landscape, be it formal or casual. Its delicate, fine-textured foliage is bright green when new and turns darker as it matures.  Full to part sun; 4’ tall and wide. Perfect for use in decorative pots for accent on a deck, patio or entryway.

Boxwood ‘Winter Gem’ is an excellent choice for small hedges. Among the hardiest of the small-leaved boxwood, its rich green foliage can acquire a bronze hue during cold winters but quickly returns to green in spring. Full to part sun; 4-6’ tall and wide. Perfect for formal gardens as a classic hedge that can be easily sheared.
