Fall Containers: Recipe for Success!

It’s time to hit the reset button for tired summer planters, and make way for fun plants that welcome fall to your home! Heritage Farm & Garden has all the ingredients for beautiful fall planters. Let’s keep it simple and easy. A few edits to your existing planters could be all that is needed – removing tired summer annuals, and filling the voids with fresh fall annuals.

Here are a few things to consider:

– Always start with healthy plants

– Choose plants that have similar light and water needs for success

– Add fresh potting soil and fertilizer to existing soil

– Remember to water thoroughly after planting

Planters can be combinations of plants that serve as thrillers, fillers, or spillers. In ‘garden talk’, here’s the translation:

Thrillers are plants that act as a focal point, think ‘wow’ plant.  Croton, millet, or ornamental grasses create vertical interest in planters.

Fillers are plants that do just that – they’re generally medium sized plants that fill the voids between the thrillers and the spillers. Think: cabbage, kale, celosia, mums. For a touch of whimsy – add a pumpkin or two.

Spillers are at the rim of planters and window boxes, they often trail or cascade over the sides. A few examples: pansies, violas, creeping Jenny, ivy.

There are no true rights or wrongs when it comes to plant combinations if you pick those that play well together with the same light and water needs. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
