Liatris for L.I. Gardens

Liatris spicata (purple) and Liatris spicata ‘Alba’ (white), aka Blazing Star or Gayfeather, are long blooming perennials for the sunny garden or landscape. Hardy in zones 3-9 (we are considered zone 7b, 7a on Long Island), Liatris inspires with strong vertical interest; its bottlebrush spikes open from the top down providing weeks of color and enjoyment.

Liatris is a clump-forming perennial that is best planted in full sun and moist, well-drained soils. Allow for some room in the garden; Liatris can grow to 2-4’ tall and 1-1 ½’ wide. This old-fashioned favorite is a butterfly magnet; plant where you can enjoy the flutterby parade!

Helpful hints: Plant extra; you will want to cut some spikes for informal flower arrangements. Leave the spent flower spikes in the garden and goldfinch will enjoy the seeds.

Did you know? If you garden in deer country, Liatris is reported to be deer resistant.
